Knocking

“But prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God.” Acts 12:5

The prison was shut and locked. The soldiers inside were resting, convinced that their prisoner could not escape. The night was dark and all of nature was resting.

Somewhere in a house on a small street, while everyone else was sleeping a band of believers were knocking on heaven’s door for one of their own.

On a dirty prison floor someone was calmly sleeping, chained to his Roman guards. His life was completely in God’s hands, and he felt secure and at peace because of that. But the people down the street kept “knocking” and no one was aware of this knocking.

The knocking was heard in heaven, God heard it, and He acted. A light shone in the prison. It radiated from an angel. Who woke up the prisoner. The prisoner stood up. He put on his sandals and garment; he was led out of the jail to freedom. The knocking of his friends continued, as he made his way thru the city to their street. He arrived at the house.

How persistent are you in your knocking? Does it get heavens attention? In the parable of the persistent widow, Jesus teaches us to persevere in prayer. He also assure us of the success in prayer saying, “ And shall not God avenge His own elect, which cry day and night unto Him?” (Luke 18 )

The story in Acts 12 underscores the importance of patient persistence in prayer. The iron gate of the prison swung open of its own accord for Peter, yet he had to wait patiently as he knocked on the door of his friends, before they permitted him to enter.

Be steadfast and faithful as you knock. And above all keep knocking.
